Sarasota Food Blog - SRQ Chew - 4 & 20 Pasty Company

Step into 4 & 20 Pasty Company which is named after the beloved nursery rhyme, Sing a Song of Sixpence and you will feel like you are in Britain. All of a sudden you are welcomed by lovely Brits, Richard aka "Mr. Pasty" and Barbara. They are such warm and friendly characters and instantly you have two new people you can call mates. All you want to do is sit down, have a cupa tea or shandy, a flavorful pasty and listen to them talk about a Doctor Who episode and use words like daft and chuffed.

Pasties are portable and individual pies filled with meats and/or veggies in a delicious pastry. Pasties can also be filled with sweet things as well like chocolate and fruit. Richard and Barbara know how to  make excellent pasties. They have been sharing their love for British pies with Sarasota for fourteen years at 4 & 20 Pasty Company off Swift Road. They offer a variety of pasties to suit every personality and taste. Everything they make is made with the freshest ingredients, consistency and a lot of love.

I tasted the steak & Guinness, chicken tikka masala, the Athena with spinach and feta cheese and the classic shepherd's pie pasties. All were rich in flavor and texture and so satisfying. Some had a unique gravy for dipping or pouring that complimented its counterpart. I also tasted the British Banger with a mild pork sausage in a flaky, buttery pastry which was divine. Whether you're in the mood for a pasty,  sausage roll or one of their handmade pork pies, you cannot go wrong by washing it all down with one of their imported sodas like a Shandy Bass.

4 & 20 Pasty Company also offers a variety of sweet pasties like the Granny Smith and raisins, the peach and apricot compote pasty and the cherry chocolate cheesecake pasty. Eccles cakes with raisins, candied peel and sugar in puff pastry with a dusting of confectioners sugar is a favorite. British chocolates, scones (my favorite) and speciality grocery items are also available.

Sing a Song of Sixpence

Sing a song of sixpence a pocket full of rye,
Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie:

When the pie was opened the birds began to sing
Oh wasn't that a dainty dish to set before the king?

The king was in his counting house counting his money,
The queen was in the parlour eating bread and honey:
The maid was in the garden hanging out the clothes:
When down came a blackbird and pecked off her nose!
